This page contains samples of my original music scores that I have composed over the years. I am also the one playing the piano pieces. The musical score I wrote for a string quartet was performed by a group at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA.
Inescapable Blaze is one of my first piano composition pieces that had its roots from some melodies I created sometime in 2021 and further refined in 2023. It follows the story of a lone person who endures through a brutal fire storm. I was inspired to write this piece after roleplaying a story with some friends of mine online. While it began as a simple passion project, it has now become one of my personal favorite pieces! Every time I listen to it, it reminds me of my friends. Inescapable Blaze is also the first of my compositions that I transcribed onto sheet music and the first of my songs that I submitted for a music competition. It won 3rd place at the Elite International Composition Competition in 2024.
This song was written during the sad and lonely times of COVID when I could not see any of my friends. I envisioned a person looking up into the night, struggling with their inner demons, and contemplating how to still carry on. Eventually, they decide it is best to hold out hope for the future, and that is what I want to convey, hope.
Regret/Determination is a two part String Quartet. I initially wrote this piece for the Berklee High School Summer Intensive as my first experience writing with string instruments. I wanted to tell the story of someone pushed to the brink of failure, but they eventually push through and find themselves at peace. Over time, it developed into much more than just an assignment to complete. Although I currently lack the time to complete the song, I hope to finish the third section and conclude the piece.
Ice Shaard is one of my newer pieces, written both as a piano single and a full orchestra. Over the summer, I watched Frozen Planet II by BBC, narrated by the one and only David Attenborough (His voice is just so iconic and soothing, perfect for nature documentaries). It showed me the awesome yet terrifying power of ice, thus creating this piece. The piece follows the story of someone who is lost in an ice cave, slowly traversing their way out of it, seeing many wonders in the cave as they go. It won 2nd place at the Elite International Composition Competition.
Trail of Light is the title of a short film provided by the Berlin International Film Scoring Competition. The competition participants were to create music that goes with the short film. I had always been writing music based on the imagery I had in my head, thus this was the first time I have ever written for a scene that I did not create. On top of this, it was also the first piece of music where I had to write for an entire orchestra, providing a completely new and unique challenge. As much as I enjoyed the whole exciting but stressful process of writing the orchestra, I must say I prefer to write from my own heart!
In history class, we watched “All Quiet on the Western Front”, a movie about the toils of the soldiers in World War One. The cruelty of soldiers fighting in trenches with hunger, disease and injury, the theme of this song immediately entered my mind. I envision a soldier pushing his way deeper into the trenches, fighting his way to victory, which he finally achieves in the end after a lot of hard toil. I wanted to express hope after hardship and despair. As long as we persevere, we will succeed.
Two kids growing up together, from elementary school to high school, from good friends to developing romantic feelings. As college approaches, what would happen next? This song pays tribute to all the happy and sad memories as they contemplate the future. The song itself is unfinished, and the story of these two may not be done either.
Since I was a child, defending a castle from waves of monsters was always my favorite fantasy. I would often create such stories and tell them to my parents, while acting it out using Lego pieces. I never coherently wrote any of my stories down. At the beginning of this year, a melody came to my head and it reminded me so much of my childhood stories, that I expanded to a piano solo piece followed by an orchestra. I think this will be my moment of fighting monsters.
